Visit the Legislature

The Yap State Legislature welcomes citizens to visit the Legislature building, observe sessions, and engage with their elected representatives and government in action.

Visiting the Legislature is an excellent way to see democracy at work and better understand how laws are made and decisions affecting your community are reached. The Legislature building is located in Colonia, Yap, and is open to the public during regular business hours.

You can attend legislative sessions when the Legislature is in session. All sessions are open to the public, allowing you to observe debates, hear legislators discuss important issues, and watch votes on proposed legislation. The session calendar is posted on this website so you can plan your visit. Visitors should arrive early to find seating in the public gallery and are asked to follow posted guidelines for conduct during sessions, including remaining quiet and refraining from disrupting proceedings.

Committee meetings are also open to the public and provide a closer look at how legislation is developed and refined. Committee hearings often include testimony from experts and citizens, making them particularly informative. Check the website for committee schedules and hearing notices.

If you wish to meet with your legislator, contact their office in advance to schedule an appointment. Legislators welcome the opportunity to hear from constituents, discuss concerns, and explain their positions on current issues. Contact information for all members is available in the Members section of this website.

Tours of the Legislature building can be arranged for school groups, community organizations, and visiting delegations. Educational tours help students and citizens learn about Yap’s government and the legislative process. Contact the Chief Clerk’s Office to arrange a tour.

The Chief Clerk’s Office can answer questions about visiting the Legislature, provide information about accessing legislative documents, or direct you to the appropriate office for assistance. Staff are available during regular business hours to help you make the most of your visit.

Whether you’re observing a session, attending a hearing, or meeting with your legislator, your visit demonstrates engaged citizenship and helps strengthen Yap’s democracy.
